When I first considered buying the Mahindra XUV500 W4, I was on the fence. The design looked a bit overdone, and the vehicle itself seemed massive. But after researching and weighing my options, I decided to go ahead and buy it from Mahaveer Cars in JP Nagar Phase 2—and looking back now, it was the right call

.
🔧 Performance that Packs a Punch
The biggest surprise was under the hood. Powered by a 2.2L mHawk diesel engine, the XUV500 W4 delivers 138 BHP and a solid 380 Nm of torque. Despite this being an older version, the engine’s response is fantastic. The torque kicks in right from the lower gears—1st through 4th—and it effortlessly pulls the car forward, even when fully loaded. On highways, it performs like a beast—easily keeping up with or even outpacing many sedans and crossovers.

Though the gear shifts on the W4 are a bit tight, especially compared to newer models, Mahindra has clearly improved this in later versions. The newer variants have much smoother transitions between gears, making the drive even more refined.
🚘 Ride Quality & Comfort – Better Than Expected
The cabin space is generous, especially in the second row. While three adults can sit comfortably, even four average-sized passengers can manage short trips without feeling cramped. This SUV has proven to be more practical than I initially assumed.

What really impressed me was the ride quality. The XUV500 doesn’t feel like a bulky SUV while driving—it handles more like a large car. The suspension is on the softer side, which can make it a bit bouncy on uneven roads, but on highways and smoother terrain, the ride is very comfortable.
The hydraulic steering is slightly heavier, but offers good control and feedback. Newer versions now come with electronic power steering, which makes it feel even more responsive and lighter at low speeds.
🧳 Built for Long Drives
I’ve taken my XUV500 on several long-distance trips, including Bangalore to Mangalore, Kumta, and Dandeli. Whether it’s highways or winding ghat roads, the SUV has handled it all with ease. With a huge boot and spacious cabin, it comfortably carries all my luggage—including groceries and supplies from my hometown.
🛑 Braking & Mileage
One area that deserves a special mention is braking. The brakes are very responsive—almost too responsive at times. A light touch is enough to initiate a strong stop, so I’ve learned to use a gentle, pumping motion rather than slamming the pedal. Once you get used to it, the braking system feels very reassuring.
In terms of fuel efficiency, I’m quite happy. I consistently get 10 km/l in the city, and 13.5–14 km/l on highways. For a big diesel-powered SUV, that’s a decent figure.

✅ Final Thoughts
Despite my initial doubts, the Mahindra XUV500 W4 has proven itself to be a dependable, powerful, and comfortable SUV. It might not be the most modern or refined in every department, but it delivers where it matters—performance, space, and long-distance comfort.
If you’re in the market for a robust SUV that can double as a family vehicle and a long-distance tourer, the XUV500—especially the newer versions—deserves a serious look.
